Our modern world seems to thrive on polarities, in separating us from one another, in creating a culture of 'us and them' - where we are taught to dislike, even hate, those who aren't 'like us'. We so often see things in binaries: good/bad, right/wrong, in/out. Yet we are reminded in our Scriptures and the history of the early 'Jesus movements' that evolved into the Church that we know, that diversity is a gift given to humanity - and that the unity Jesus called his followers to have was not uniformity, and their belonging to community was not conformity. We are all loved, and we are called to love others as we are loved - stranger, and friend, neighbour, and even enemy. This love is expansive, forgiving, and gracious, inspired by the loving Spirit of God, gifted by the Creator, and exemplified by the life, teaching, and even death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.
