The Light We Carry
An inspirational memoir I read this winter was Michelle Obama’s second book “The Light We Carry.” As former First Lady of the US, a corporate lawyer and advocate, she also speaks out as a parent, sibling, and Christian. Her stories are humble and surprising. She describes growing up with a father who suffered from MS, who had amazing dignity and courage. She described incidents of racism and childhood hardship, but is grateful for challenges her family has overcome.
“When they go low, we go high.” She discusses this campaign slogan whose purpose is to discourage people from descending into the bipartisan muck-raking that has become so common. She admits “going high” is difficult when attacks become personal. Trying to stay above the mentality of retribution is a lofty goal in politics these days, but she shows that it can bear fruit.
The title refers to all the great lessons in life. We glean pieces of wisdom from all kinds of sources, to then pass on. She urges all kind, good-hearted people to share our light in the following ways: Love your family (born or chosen) and keep them close, Share your light and wisdom whenever you can, Be a beacon for others, Stay humble and keep learning. All of these principles are profound, and particularly important in times of change, uncertainty, and upheaval.
Scripture
Jesus said, "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven." Matthew 5.16
