Earlier this week was the commemoration of Archbishop Óscar Romero, now 'Saint Oscar Romero' in the Catholic tradition. Óscar was a leader in the Roman Catholic Church in El Salvador at a time when the USA backed Government was committing human rights abuses, murder, and the oppression of the poor. In the midst of this violence Archbishop Romero stood alongside the poor, and spoke for those who were being silenced, even though he knew his own life was at risk.

Archbishop Romero preached a Gospel of spiritual reform, where all would be liberated - those who were oppressed and those who oppressed. He stood for non-violence in the face of violent repression all around him. He was murdered, by a Government hit squad, on the steps of a Hospital chapel having just celebrated mass.

Óscar's example inspired many within and beyond the Church in El Salvador and all over the world, his courage to stand and speak the truth continues to inspire today and he was Canonized by Pope Francis in May 2015.

Scripture

And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.    Luke 1:46–55
