There is no agreement as to why today is called Good Friday in English - some sources say it evolved from 'God's Friday' in the same way that 'Goodbye' evolved from 'God be with you', some say it is because of the goodness of Jesus, and there are a variety of etymological theories as to the origin of the name.
The word 'Good' has become one that is layered with moral value, a contrast or opposition to 'bad' - but our Scriptures rarely talk about good and bad, instead it is more common to read of 'wickedness and righteousness' - and we are called, as followers of the Divine way, to be righteous and holy (and holy doesn't mean 'pure' in the sense of morally pure as it has come to be used, but set apart/distinct/for Divine purpose - but that's probably a discussion for another blog post).
Being righteous, though, is not just being 'good' in the conventional sense of being 'morally good' - it is an active, courageous word. Filled with nuance and depth the essential qualities of righteousness are connected to justice, being upright, and possessing virtue. To be righteous is to stand for justice, to be trustworthy, fair, and equitable. May we, on this Good Friday, seek the goodness that is righteousness.
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
‘Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
‘Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
‘Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
