“Absolute freedom is absolute nonsense! We gain freedom in anything through commitment, discipline, and fixed habit.”
Richard J. Foster, from Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home
Lent is a time of discipline, the discipline of fasting, study, giving to those in need, a time of prayer. In one of those wonderful paradoxes in life it is in such discipline we find ourselves free - free of the encumberances and distractions of daily life which threaten to overwhelm us.
For the artist, it is the discipline of learning technique, of understanding the media you use, of learning to see, of knowing how light, shadow, colour, shade interplay that frees them to be able to create the art they wish to create. As an artist they are unique, and the discipline of practise, training, learning allows them to express their uniqueness. For the musician, the learning of music theory, the listening to music, the training to play an instrument, all combined with practice, practice, practice, allows them to play freely. For the athlete, the process to allow them to freely express their gifts comes again through training, discipline, practice.
For those of us on a Spiritual path it is likewise - learning the disciplines of faith frees our hearts, our minds, our spirits to truly encounter the depths and breadths of our faith and life.
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
2 Timothy 1.7
