At an online event for Black History Month BC a couple years back, Dr Cornell West said, "People say to me 'stay woke, brother' and I reply 'I don't want to stay woke, I want to be rested for the work that needs to be done."

Of course Dr. West knows what it means to be woke, to be aware and awake to the racist history of slavery, oppression, violence, mistreatment, murder, at the heart of what has created the USA of today, but his wordplay on rest and resilience is well said. Self care is an essential part of building and maintaining our courageous faith.

There use to be a Twitter account which through the day would regularly post. "How are you? Have you eaten, drunk enough water, got outside, rested, taken your meds, today?" We all need prompts to remind us to care for ourselves in order that we might be resilient, strong, and courageous in our living and loving.

Scripture

In returning and rest you shall be saved;
   in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.  Isaiah 30.15
