Reflection

We often associate 'courage' with striking out and doing 'new' things, but as Bishop Marianne Edgar Budde says in her book 'How We Learn to Be Brave' - there is often as much courage in staying where we are, confronting what needs addressing, dealing with the difficulties (whether it be boredome or overwhelm), and resolving to remain, in love, where we are.

Not that we should every stay in a place where we are being abused, in danger, or under threat of danger - too many people have been kept in abusive relationships, or harmful situations by the false teaching of 'you made vows' or 'God wants you there'.

But resolving to stay when moving might be easier or more exciting. Committing to the work that could create profound change right here, that is a work of courage - a work that, in partnership with God's gracious Spirit, can renew and transform the world where we are.

Scripture

... for I have learned to be content with whatever I have. I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. I can do all things through the One who strengthens me.
