Whilst watching The Voice a few days ago (there's a confession for you) there was a performance from Lauren Daigle of her hit song 'You Say' - and I heard it a whole new way when I discovered it was on the U.S 'Christian Charts' for 111 weeks. I thought it was a powerful song about being in a relationship with someone affirming and encouraging partner, just a good, romantic, song - but it sounds very different when you realise it is, in essence, a praise song.
My experience of growing up with the 'Christian music sub-culture' was much more an experience of songs that reminded me of how much I needed to be saved, how I needed to 'preach Jesus' to my friends and neighbours, and how heaven and hell awaited as eternal reward or punishment depending on whether I had prayed the right prayer. A song like this which is essentially so uplifting and positive feels very different, a glimpse of a God of love!
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through the one who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. You Say
I keep fighting voices in my mind that say I'm not enough
Every single lie that tells me I will never measure upAm I more than just the sum of every high and every low
Remind me once again just who I am because I need to know
Ooh-ohYou say I am loved when I can't feel a thing
You say I am strong when I think I am weak
And you say I am held when I am falling short
And when I don't belong, oh You say I am Yours
And I believe (I)
Oh, I believe (I)
What You say of me (I)
I believeThe only thing that matters now is everything You think of me
In You I find my worth, in You I find my identity
Ooh-ohYou say I am loved when I can't feel a thing
You say I am strong when I think I am weak
And you say I am held when I am falling short
When I don't belong, oh You say I am Yours
And I believe (I)
Oh, I believe (I)
What You say of me (I)
Oh, I believeTaking all I have, and now I'm laying it at Your feet
You have every failure, God, You have every victory
Ooh-ohYou say I am loved when I can't feel a thing
You say I am strong when I think I am weak
You say I am held when I am falling short
When I don't belong, oh You say I am Yours
And I believe (I)
Oh, I believe (I)
What You say of me (I)
I believeOh, I believe (I)
Yes, I believe (I)
What You say of me (I)
